ALL-STARS BATTLE TO THE BOX: ROUND 21

With Leicester Riders not in action this weekend, round 21 on the BBL schedule offered an opportunity for the chasing pack to gain ground on the league leaders.

Glasgow Rocks managed to do just that, winning in overtime after an incredible comeback away at Worcester Wolves on Friday. The visitors had trailed by 15 at the halfway stage but Kofi Joseph’s triple forced overtime and Kieron Achara was then able to see Rocks to victory.

Wolves were straight back to action on Saturday evening, this time on the road at Bristol Flyers. The sides traded baskets during the first quarter but by halfway the hosts had opened a six-point lead and were able to extend that into double figures at times during the third and fourth quarters, eventually winning 82-74.

It was a crucial win for Flyers, who tighten their grip on eighth place by four points to Cheshire Phoenix. Flyers are now within two points of London Lions, Wolves and Surrey Scorchers who share fifth on 22 points, though Flyers have one match in hand over Wolves and have played three fewer than Scorchers.

It was a good weekend too for DBL Sheffield Sharks. They opened on Friday evening with a 107-79 success away at Yorkshire rivals Leeds Forces and notched up another win on the road on Sunday afternoon, defeating Cheshire Phoenix 82-77 to climb to fourth on the standing. Elsewhere Surrey Scorchers registered a 109-88 success over Manchester Giants in the highest scoring encounter of the round.

The top seven teams on the final BBL standing at the end of the season will join defending champions London Lions in the British Basketball All-Stars Championship at Copper Box Arena, London on Sunday, October 14.
